wanting and not wanting at the same time

a comic for asexual awareness week

bringing this back today for the start of pride month. still overwhelmed by how well this comic went down and with how many people relate. it’s easy to think aro-ace people are all totally accepting of their identities and really proud of who they are. i guess on websites like this you see a lot of people proudly putting their identity in their bio, a flag in their profile picture.

in fact i think a lot of aro-ace people really hate that part of themselves, hide it, and struggle for a long time to ‘accept’ who they are and feel any sense of ‘pride’. that’s the feeling i wanted to capture here. the disappointment, the loneliness, upon realising that you can’t feel what is such a wonderful thing. the embarrassment of not being ‘normal’, of being some random sexuality that nobody irl has heard of, and letting down those around you because you can’t be who they want you to be. how desperately you want to change, how desperately you want to feel. but you just can’t.

i know not all aro-ace people feel like this. i know lots of aro and/or ace people feel able to be in relationships, to feel closeness and have partners in other ways. but i think it’s important to be aware that some aro-ace people do feel like this.

the comments on this comic have mostly been great but a few have been very frustrating. a comment it got a lot was along the lines of ‘aw!! you don’t need to have sex to be in a relationship!’. you completely missed the point, hah. this is not a comic about sex. it’s about a lack of feeling, the lack of something beautiful other people seem to have. another comment that popped up a few times was ‘maybe she’s a lesbian’. well maybe lesbians and aro/ace girls have more in common than people think - maybe they both often struggle to accept that they feel no attraction to men, even though society has conditioned them to do so, sometimes spending years trying to force themselves to like men in that way, when they just can’t.

this comic is called ‘wanting and not wanting at the same time’ because she wants to love. but when it comes down to the reality, she can’t fulfil the requirements of that. she wants to love someone forever, to get married and have children and grow old with her soulmate, but she doesn’t want it with this person. or that person. or anyone she meets or will ever meet. a sort of catch 22, i guess.

hope that makes sense. thanks for listening, and have a lovely pride month ❤️

HEY THERE, Y'ALL!

As we move into 2019 and presidential hopefuls start their campaigns, remember:

- DO NOT FORM POLITICAL OPINIONS BASED ON INFOGRAPHICS. Read source material. If a journalist is legitimate, they will not pass off their statements as fact without proof.

- DO NOT TAKE SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS AS TRUTH. Not even when they are made by someone you trust.

- DO NOT TRUST ANY SOURCE UNLESS IT IS CORRABORATED BY MULTIPLE OTHER CREDIBLE SOURCES.

There are already bots posting propaganda, actively targeting leftists, encouraging us not to vote in various ways.

Do not let them win.

This political system is heinously broken, but consider what evil still has to gain from silencing you before you allow yourself to be silenced.

Above all, we make a pact: We get involved and choose the best candidate we all can in 2019. But no matter WHO gets nominated, WE VOTE FOR THE PERSON WHO CAN GET RID OF THE FASCISTS IN 2020.

Make your peace with it NOW. Make your peace with knowing that even if YOUR favorite candidate doesn’t get the DNC nom, this is our ONE SHOT to avoid six more years of terror for every single minority friend you have.

friendly reminder that in 2019 lgbtq solidarity is going to COEXIST, meaning:

  • 20biteen does not take ‘take away’ 20dyketeen from the lesbians because nobody owns the year
  • 20noneteen doesn’t ‘take away’ 20biteen and 20dyketeen from the bisexuals and lesbians
  • 20mineteen belongs to everyone except those of us who can’t fuckin afford minecraft (communism failed us, folks)
  • and in 2019 bisexuals, aspecs, and lesbians are going to support and uplift each other and not worry about making people angry with harmless jokes because,
  • 2019 is the year of understanding that lgbtq solidarity is better when there’s more of it for all of us

this has been a PSA

did U GUYS KNOW, that the way stores get the balloons off of the ceiling is with ANOTHER balloon, w tape on the top??? and they just dont cut the string so it’s like super long and u gotta aim it right n reel it in. i just found that out today when i DID IT and it’s been the best working day of my life i had a blast blowing up balloons and fetching some off the ceiling. i had so much power? and NO ONE ELSE in my department likes that job so now it’s MY job when need be

omg so I work at a museum and one of our buildings has a) very high ceilings and b) a bizarrely sensitive alarm system that will go off if anything touches the ceiling. Because of this, helium balloons are considered public enemy #1 and are strictly forbidden from entering the museum. But just in case an illicit balloon is successfully smuggled in, the museum has acquired a fucking b.b. gun for the express purpose of shooting down rogue balloons.

prehistoric burials make me really emotional because people go “it’s natural to only think of yourself to get ahead! people who don’t do anything shouldn’t be a part of society! back in caveman days they would have died!”

but there is archaeological proof that this is wrong. That even at our most “primitive” we cared about the well being of others.

like Shanindar 1. Shanindar 1 is a neanderthal from 35,000 to 45,000 years ago who was buried with many others in Shanindar Cave, Israel. At this point in time we had not yet developed settlements. Shanindar 1 was part of a nomadic hunter-gatherer group.

Shanindar 1 was severely disabled. From his skeleton we can gather the following

  1. At a young age he had suffered a blow to the face which left him blind in one eye
  2. He had significant hearing loss from birth deformities. One ear canal was completely blocked, while the other was only mostly blocked.
  3. His right, and probably dominant, arm was withered, fractured, and the bottom half amputated.
  4. He had a limp, possibly from a degenerative disease.

If you believe that it’s only natural to abandon the weak he should have been left to die instead of drain the group’s resources. Someone like that would have needed assistance for his entire life. He would have slowed the group down with his limp. His sensory impairments meant he would require help to spot and defend himself from predators. His arm meant he couldn’t hunt or build.

He lived well into his 40s. For a neanderthal of that era he would be considered old. His group decided that they would help him survive not because he brought anything to the group, but because he was still a person who mattered to them. Even at the end of his life he wasn’t abandoned; he was buried with dozens of others.

His group decided that they would help him survive not because he brought anything to the group

this… this is why I get uncomfortable with discussions about Shanindar 1. Because none of this is necessarily wrong, but there’s an underlying assumption being made in that phrasing.

You don’t know what he brought to the group. He probably wasn’t a great hunter or gatherer. But neanderthal life was, despite common belief, not just a matter of eating and not getting eaten. Most social animals have additional needs, which aren’t necessarily archaeologically evident.

Maybe he told really good jokes, and kept people’s spirits up. Maybe he was very good with children, and could look after them while their parents went out gathering food. Maybe he had a good memory, and could help to draw on past experiences; maybe he could tell interesting stories and keep social cohesion; maybe just the act of caring for him brought the tribe together.

Maybe none of that is true, and his survival was genuinely despite him bringing nothing to the tribe. I don’t believe it would have been wrong or foolish to keep him around just because he was family, and for no other reason. I don’t think he necessarily was a key part of the tribe.

I just think it’s very disconcerting that everyone assumes he wasn’t.
